This document is intended as a tool for local educators to use in reviewing local content standards and benchmarks to determine if they provide adequate coverage of the essential concepts and skill sets of the Model Core Curriculum for Iowa’s High Schools. School districts are encouraged to use the Model Core Curriculum as a guide when determining the courses acceptable in meeting the new graduation requirements: four years of English/language arts, three years of mathematics, three years of science, and three years of social studies. All high schools are encouraged to insure that every student’s academic program includes the development of these essential concepts and skill sets.
The first column contains the essential concepts and skill sets of the Model Core Curriculum for Iowa’s High Schools. They were developed through a process that allowed for a comprehensive review of the literature and best practice information in each of these content areas. They were also identified collaboratively by a number of Iowans including students, parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, AEA and DE personnel, business representatives, and representatives of higher education.
The second column identifies the Core Content Standards and Benchmarks Corresponding to the Iowa Tests. These were developed by Iowa Testing Services as part of the Iowa Technical Adequacy Project (ITAP) to help districts ensure that local curricula align with the Iowa Tests. All of the ITED Grade 10-12 Benchmarks in Reading, Mathematics, and Science fall within the parameters of the essential concepts and skill sets of the Model Core Curriculum. Reading benchmarks are indicated with an (R),
Mathematics benchmarks are marked as (M), and Science benchmarks are marked as (S).
The third column is to be completed with educators are they review local content standards and benchmarks.
