ICAN FAFSA Assistance

For students or parents who would like to have help in completing the FAFSA, You can book an appointment at the nearest ICAN office.  For western Iowa, ICAN offices are located at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City, and Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny.  For families living in more south-central Iowa near I-35, ICAN will have appointments available at Consumer Credit in Des Moines, 6129 SW 63rd St in Des Moines.  That is a location on the southern edge of Des Moines.  Appointments at Consumer Credit are largely on a Friday and additional days in later November.

Remember, you should file your FAFSA on or before the financial aid priority date of the college or colleges that a student would like to attend.  Here is a link for the financial aid priority dates in Iowa:  www.icansucceed.org/fafsadate

Here are two good ways to get an appointment:

  1. Call 877-272-4692 – whoever answers can set up an appointment for you with me.  Call 8:00-4:30, Mon-Fri.  If busy leave a voice mail and we will get back to you.

  1. You can book your appointment through the ICAN website at www.icansucceed.org or click on this link: https://www.schedulicity.com/scheduling/ICARUB   The site will take you through the steps to set up an appointment in an ICAN office. Be sure to click “Book My Visit” at the end.  You will receive a confirmation email during the day you set up the appointment and a reminder email one day ahead of the appointment.  If you don’t receive a confirmation email, please call ICAN at 877-272-4692 and check on the appointment.

For locations where computer lab days are held, see this list of FAFSA Ready Iowa Sites: www.icansucceed.org/fafsareadyia

You will use the 2017 tax return and W-2s for the 2019-20 FAFSA.  Here is a great list of what you will need: http://www.icansucceed.org/documents/filelibrary/materials_library/ICAN__ReadytoFile__FAN_handout_18_1_CACAA8A9ED097.pdf

You will need to set up a Federal Student Aid ID for the student and probably for one parent on the FAFSA.  Do this at website: fsaid.ed.gov

Here is a link to help you do that: http://www.icansucceed.org/index.cfm?nodeID=82852&audienceID=1

If you already have FSA IDs done, just bring them to the appointment.  Please write down the FSA ID for the student and parent and bring it to the appointment. (user name, password, email address)

At ICAN we would be very glad to help you.  Appointments are free of charge and completed in 45 minutes for one FAFSA appointment.  We can help with high school seniors and with college students returning for the next college year.
